Brainminders presentation at Mount Holly Health Fair

Our Club is dedicated to serving our community with a focus on brain-related injuries & disorders. Our members develop life long friendships while helping others. We provide our membership with opportunities to learn new skills, teach others and serve their community. The group is open to all men & woman who have a desire to help others.

The Pilot Club of Gastonia held its first meeting on September 4, 1937 and was chartered April 2, 1938.  One of the first accomplishments was a donation of 25% of the needed funds towards a five-month textile design school.  In the 1940s, the club began supporting March of Dimes and with Jennie Craig Watson organized the Mental Health Association of Gastonia.  The 1950s found Pilots, as one of the original sponsors, holding a circus to raise funds for the Gaston County Center for Handicapped Children.  In the decades following, the club has been involved with Meals-On-Wheels, creation of Gaston Skills, 1057 volunteer hours to elderly were logged in 1974-1975, establishment of a Gaston College scholarship and a long-time relationship with the Alzheimer's Memory Walk.

Matching grants from Pilot International Foundation have helped the club provide a greenhouse, wheelchair rockers, horticulture equipment, art equipment & more for Holy Angels. The club funds a scholarship at Gaston College & donates to Pilot International & NC District scholarships for qualifying students going into health-related fields.

BrainMinders™ is an educational program for young children ages 4-7 to teach them to 'protect their brain for life.'  Using animal puppets along with a story, these children learn about the need to wear helmets while biking, skating, roller blading, sledding, etc., looking both ways before crossing streets, and other safety issues.  The club takes this program into preschools, daycares, churches and elementary schools.

Expanding on the BrainMinders™ program, the club now presents to seniors & baby-boomers on subjects like brain fitness, stoke awareness, & other issues.

The clubs signature project has been bringing Project Lifesaver to Gaston County. Partnering with the Gaston County Sheriff's Office & GEMS to provide the search capabilities, this program uses radio frequency locators to find program clients who tend to wander such as people with Alzheimers, autism, Downs, and other brain injuries or disorders. The club is the primary sponsor, raising funds through grants & donations. They also organize & manage the client support including changing batteries on a monthly basis.
